Roche seeks a Principal Machine Learning Engineer in Basel to lead AI enablement within its Computational Sciences Center of Excellence, focusing on scalable ML systems for scientific partners.
This position is embedded in the Engineering - AI Enablement group under the Data and Digital Catalyst organisation. The primary objective is to transform AI and machine learning into a standard utility for scientists, supporting everything from data analysis to literature search. The role drives the modernization of computational ecosystems by enabling AI capabilities across scientific and computational partnerships.
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and validate scalable, maintainable backend systems and web applications designed for scientific AI/ML use cases.
- Create evaluation tools to assess AI/ML model performance and develop novel methods for measuring AI quality.
- Collaborate with product managers and scientists to define user requirements and convert them into precise technical specifications.
- Design and manage infrastructure for ingesting, structuring, and storing diverse scientific data to support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives.
- Research, implement, and evaluate new machine learning algorithms and analytical techniques.
- Participate in architectural planning, code reviews, and the continuous improvement of development workflows.
- Demonstrate full-stack versatility by contributing to various parts of the system beyond the core area of expertise.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry standards, fostering a mindset of continuous learning and collaboration.
Requirements
- Master’s or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience, along with at least five years in machine learning engineering.
- Deep expertise in statistics, machine learning theory, and algorithms, plus strong proficiency with major AI/ML frameworks and libraries.
- Hands-on experience with Dagster and Kubeflow, including a solid understanding of ML performance optimization and GPU best practices.
- Proficiency with Kubernetes, relational or NoSQL databases, data lakes, and cloud-native architectures, preferably on AWS.
- Strong engineering discipline combined with excellent communication skills.
- Willingness to work on-site in Basel three days per week.

- Background in handling imaging or biological data, experience in research environments, workflow automation, or specialized fields like Generative AI and agents.
