Research Scientist - LLM Efficiency

Apple seeks a Senior Research Scientist in Zürich to advance the efficiency of large language models and diffusion models through innovative machine learning research.

This position is embedded within a team of elite researchers and engineers dedicated to powering technologies across the Apple ecosystem. The role focuses on pushing the boundaries of machine learning efficiency for frontier models, with outcomes shared through selective scientific publications and integrated into Apple products.

Responsibilities

• Create novel approaches to enhance the performance and efficiency of large language models and diffusion models.
• Execute empirical experiments to gain deeper insights into the behavior of advanced AI models.
• Build functional prototypes that validate the effectiveness of new algorithms and model architectures.
• Share findings with the broader academic community through conference presentations and peer-reviewed papers.
• Partner with internal product groups to transition research concepts into shipped features.

Requirements

• Proven track record of developing end-to-end prototypes that reach state-of-the-art results in specialized domains.
• Published research at top-tier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or COLM.
• Ability to operate across the full machine learning stack, spanning low-level system optimization to high-level algorithmic design.
• Strong software engineering capabilities with experience managing complex technical systems.
• Native-level proficiency in Python programming.
• Deep understanding of machine learning algorithms and established practices for deep learning infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience with major modeling frameworks, specifically PyTorch and JAX.

Nice to have

• A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or comparable professional background.
