Research Engineer: Language Runtimes

The company seeks a Senior Research Engineer for Language Runtimes in Zürich to bridge software and hardware through systems research and innovation.

This position sits at the intersection of systems research and practical engineering, connecting modern high-level software with underlying hardware. The team focuses on fundamental research and innovation to advance future computing systems, bringing together diverse generalists who complement one another.

Responsibilities

• Analyze dynamic language workloads in mobile and data center settings to pinpoint architectural bottlenecks.
• Develop new features aimed at enhancing performance and power efficiency at the hardware-software boundary.
• Build and test proof-of-concept implementations within current production runtimes.
• Partner with researchers and hardware architects to deliver data-driven insights that shape future silicon design.
• Stay updated on advancements in managed languages and computer architecture across academia and industry.

Requirements

• Hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Architecture, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Demonstrate hands-on experience with language runtime engines such as V8, JSC, CPython, HotSpot, or comparable systems.
• Show proficiency in C++ and comfort working within large codebases.
• Possess a solid grasp of operating system fundamentals, including kernels, memory management, and process scheduling.
• Understand processor architectures and memory hierarchies.
• Be capable of independently tackling research-oriented challenges.

Nice to have

• A PhD in Computer Science or Computer Architecture focusing on compilers, hardware/software interfaces, or system optimization.
• Prior experience designing hardware features to support software abstractions, or vice versa.
• Extensive knowledge of JIT compilation strategies, garbage collection, and speculative execution.
• Familiarity with the specific constraints of mobile computing or hyperscale datacenter workloads.
• Experience using architectural simulators or FPGA prototyping.
• A track record of technical publications or contributions to open-source runtime projects.
