CERN seeks a Safety Engineer for its Beams Department in Geneva to ensure the safety of particle accelerator operations and experimental areas through risk assessment, audits, and compliance management.
Positioned within the Safety Unit of the Beams Department, this role is dedicated to safeguarding the world’s most complex particle accelerators. The engineer plays a key part in shaping safety protocols at the forefront of scientific research, specifically focusing on the protection and operational performance of CERN’s fixed target experimental zones.
Responsibilities
- Analyze safety needs and deploy risk reduction strategies for accelerator operations, beam activities, and major projects.
- Verify that laboratories, workshops, and installations meet safety standards via regular audits, inspections, and testing procedures.
- Grant authorization for various activities by conducting safety evaluations and issuing permits, ensuring strict adherence to internal safety regulations.
- Deliver training and raise awareness regarding safety issues to ensure that best practices are widely understood and implemented.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of safety and quality management systems, including the maintenance of relevant documentation.
Requirements
- A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Nuclear Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Aerospace Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven track record in safety engineering, risk evaluation, and licensing within complex technical settings like research facilities or large-scale engineering initiatives.
- Background in producing documentation and managing quality systems for regulated industries.
- Experience in performing inspections, analyzing incidents, and managing follow-up actions.
- Ability to liaise with stakeholders and promote a robust safety culture through effective communication and training.
- Understanding of regulations concerning operational and radiological safety.
- Fluency in spoken and written English or French, with a willingness to learn the other language.
- Possession of a valid driving license.
Nice to have
- Experience or knowledge in Electrical Safety.
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary and diverse environment.
