Novartis seeks a Senior Director, Epidemiologist in Basel, CH, to lead global oncology epidemiology strategy across the product lifecycle. The role involves shaping benefit-risk decisions, engaging with health authorities, and mentoring teams in a hybrid, full-time position.

As Senior Director, Epidemiologist, you will shape the global epidemiology strategy for multiple oncology programs, guiding benefit-risk decisions from development through post-approval. You will serve as a key scientific leader, translating complex evidence into strategic, defensible positions that support patient safety and enhance Novartis’ scientific reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead global epidemiology strategies focused on oncology across various programs and indications throughout the full product lifecycle
  • Lead safety evidence generation to support benefit-risk assessments, regulatory submissions, and post-approval commitments
  • Act as a senior scientific leader in cross-functional teams, influencing global program and safety management decisions
  • Represent epidemiology in high-impact interactions with health authorities, including advisory committees and regulatory discussions
  • Translate complex epidemiological data into clear, actionable insights for senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Design and oversee innovative study approaches, including non-interventional studies and real-world evidence generation
  • Build strategic partnerships with external researchers, data partners, and academic institutions
  • Ensure high-quality, compliant deliverables by adhering to regulatory and organizational standards
  • Lead and mentor junior epidemiologists to build strong, high-performing teams and enhance scientific capabilities
  • Promote innovation by advancing cutting-edge epidemiological methods and driving global improvement initiatives

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in epidemiology, statistics, or health services research
  • Minimum 10–12 years of experience in epidemiology within the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken, with strong scientific communication abilities
  • Expert understanding of epidemiological principles and their application in drug development and safety evaluation
  • Proven experience in designing, conducting, and interpreting epidemiological studies and real-world evidence
  • Strong knowledge of drug development processes and regulatory requirements, including interactions with health authorities
  • Demonstrated leadership in influencing strategy and decision-making in global, cross-functional settings
  • Innovative mindset with a history of advancing methodologies, processes, or scientific approaches

Nice to have

  • Experience supporting oncology programs in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry
  • Proficiency in an additional local language relevant to the hiring location
  • Strong record of scientific publications and external engagement
