Bachem seeks a Senior Process Automation Engineer to lead automation strategy for a new peptide production facility in Stein AG, Switzerland, focusing on downstream processing and CAPEX project execution.
This position acts as the primary subject matter expert for process automation within a major capital expenditure initiative to establish a new manufacturing site in Sisslerfeld. The engineer will drive technical decisions, ensuring that automation concepts align with production goals while managing external partners and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Create and deploy automation solutions for downstream unit operations, covering Level 0 through 2.5.
- Convert process specifications into detailed automation concepts, including batch logic and control strategies.
- Evaluate and refine system architectures and automation designs alongside external engineering partners.
- Connect new systems into the broader automation ecosystem, including DCS, PLC, MES, and Historian platforms.
- Guarantee adherence to GMP, GAMP5, data integrity standards, and validation protocols.
- Manage and direct external engineering firms, system integrators, and construction contractors.
- Partner with Engineering, MSAT, IT/OT, and Quality teams to ensure seamless integration.
- Guide the project from initial concept through commissioning, qualification, and final handover.
- Develop standardized automation frameworks for the new facility.
- Oversee project delivery to meet quality, budget, and schedule targets.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in automation, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or a related discipline.
- 8–10 years of professional experience in automation roles within pharmaceutical or biotech sectors.
- Deep expertise in downstream process automation, including chromatography, filtration, and purification.
- Proficiency with DCS systems (Siemens PCS7, PCSneo), PLCs (Siemens TIA Portal), SCADA (WinCC), and batch control.
- Hands-on experience with MES, historian systems, and data/PAT integration.
- Strong grasp of GMP, GAMP5 guidelines, and CQV processes (IQ/OQ/PQ).
- Demonstrated success in managing CAPEX projects within interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work independently with a structured approach and high accountability.
- Resilience and flexibility in a dynamic project environment.
