AI Research Scientist - Multimodal Intelligence

Apple seeks a Senior AI Research Scientist in Zürich to advance multimodal foundation models and generative AI for future products.

This position sits within the Multimodal Intelligence Team, which has a history of delivering features that utilize multiple sensors, such as FaceID and hand tracking in VisionPro. The successful candidate will define new research trajectories in multimodal foundation models to inspire the next generation of Apple products.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and build methods to enhance the alignment, reasoning, and adaptation of large models for real-world applications.
• Develop specialized foundation models with specific capabilities that run efficiently in resource-constrained settings.
• Architect and refine large-scale data pipelines to ensure robust training and evaluation of foundation models.
• Explore novel techniques to improve focused reasoning, multimodal comprehension, and adaptive behaviors.
• Collaborate with cross-functional groups of engineers and researchers to embed models into Apple products.
• Monitor emerging research trends and identify techniques suitable for deployment in production environments.

Requirements

• Strong programming proficiency in Python.
• Hands-on experience with at least one modern deep learning framework, such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
• Proven track record working with large-scale training pipelines and distributed systems.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or a related technical discipline.
• At least six years of relevant professional experience.

Nice to have

• PhD or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• A publication record at top-tier conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, or COLM.
• End-to-end experience with foundation model training, particularly in vision-language domains.
• Familiarity with large-scale data pipelines, including data curation, preprocessing, and efficient storage.
• Experience with advanced reasoning or reinforcement learning methods.
• Knowledge of model distillation using on-policy or off-policy techniques.
