Associate Director, Scientific Digital Lead – Bioconjugation

Lonza seeks an Associate Director to lead digital innovation in bioconjugation, bridging science, data, and AI to enhance R&D outcomes in Basel.

This position serves as a strategic link between scientific research and digital technology within the Advanced Synthesis division. The primary objective is to leverage data, artificial intelligence, and computational tools to accelerate development processes and generate tangible business value. The role operates primarily from the office in Basel, with the option to work remotely for up to 20% of the time.

Responsibilities

• Identify and drive digital innovation opportunities within bioconjugation by applying data, AI, and computational methods to improve scientific results.
• Collaborate with scientists and business leaders to pinpoint challenges and convert them into effective digital solutions.
• Establish digital use cases, define success metrics, create user stories, and outline high-level functional requirements.
• Guide cross-functional agile teams comprising subject matter experts, data scientists, engineers, and IT partners.
• Oversee the full lifecycle of solution delivery, from initial concept to deployment, ensuring user adoption and stakeholder alignment.
• Track emerging trends in science and digital technology to recommend future capabilities that boost R&D performance.
• Serve as a mentor and thought leader to help expand digital competencies throughout the organization.

Requirements

• A PhD in Chemistry, Bioconjugation, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Computational Sciences, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Demonstrated background in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CDMO, CRO, or similar scientific sectors.
• Hands-on experience using digital, data science, computational, or AI-driven approaches to solve research and development problems.
• Proven track record of translating scientific requirements into scalable digital products or solutions.
• Strong skills in stakeholder management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration.

• Experience in digital transformation, scientific workflow digitalization, analytics, AI/ML, or innovation strategy.
