The University of Geneva offers a 75% fixed-term PhD position in political science and international relations, focusing on state reconfiguration in urban Africa under the VERTICAF project.
This doctoral role involves designing and executing empirical research on how states are being reconfigured in urban African contexts. The candidate will work under the supervision of Didier Péclard within the VERTICAF project, contributing to the broader SNSF initiative while engaging with the Department of Political Science and International Relations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and write a doctoral thesis aligned with the Department of Political Science and International Relations.
- Engage in project activities such as workshops, international conferences, field research, and publications.
- Take part in the doctoral program in political science organized by the Conference of Universities of Western Switzerland.
- Contribute to research initiatives within the Department of Political Science, the Geneva School of Social Sciences, and the Geneva Africa Lab.
Requirements
- Hold a Master’s degree in Political Science, African Studies, Urban Studies, or an equivalent qualification.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in and prior experience studying state-society relations in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Show proven proficiency in qualitative methods and ethnographic approaches.
- Possess field knowledge of the Global South.
- Have excellent command of both French and English.
Nice to have
- Prior research experience in urban areas of Africa.
- Proficiency in Portuguese.
