PhD candidate (100%) for developing multi-physics models of planar inductors and transformers

ETH Zurich seeks a full-time PhD candidate to develop multi-physics models for planar inductors and transformers within a new research project on compact power electronic systems.

This position is based at the Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at ETH Zurich's Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The role focuses on creating multi-physics models, digital twins, and virtual prototypes for planar magnetics at both component and system levels as part of a new research initiative on highly compact, low-profile power electronic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Create multi-physics models of planar magnetics to analyze high-frequency losses, parasitic capacitances, and temperature distribution.
  • Develop models for designing the electrical insulation of the winding.
  • Work on optimising the core and winding geometry, as well as developing advanced cooling concepts.
  • Identify technological barriers to power density of planar magnetics based on the models and developed concepts.
  • Integrate developed models into optimisation procedures for power electronic converter systems in a computationally efficient manner.
  • Collaborate with other PhD candidates on various modelling aspects.
  • Design and build different prototypes, including PE converter systems, to operate the planar magnetics under realistic conditions.

Requirements

  • Must have a diploma/M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with excellent grades.
  • Must have fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must be willing to fully commit yourself as part of an international team.

  • Interest in the detailed modelling and design of magnetic components and the optimisation of power electronic systems.
