ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate to develop multi-physics models for high-power medium-frequency transformers, focusing on optimization and prototype verification in an international research team.
This position is embedded within a broader modeling framework development project at the High Power Electronics (HPE) group. The successful candidate will pursue a doctoral degree centered on the modeling and optimization of high-power, medium-frequency transformers. The role encourages collaboration with other PhD researchers working on related modeling challenges.
Responsibilities
- Create multi-physics models that account for high-frequency losses, thermal distribution, resonances, and electrical insulation behavior.
- Optimize the geometry of cores and windings, design advanced cooling strategies, and engineer connections for high-current windings.
- Utilize developed models to identify technological limitations regarding the transferable power and efficiency of medium-frequency transformers.
- Integrate these models into optimization procedures for power electronic converter systems with a focus on computational efficiency.
- Design and construct medium-frequency transformer prototypes, including associated converter systems, to verify performance under realistic operating conditions.
Requirements
- Hold a diploma or Master of Science degree in electrical engineering with excellent academic grades.
- Demonstrate fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems.
- Possess strong communication skills.
- Be fluent in English.
- Be prepared to fully commit to the role within an international team environment.
Nice to have
- Interest in the detailed modeling and design of magnetic components and the optimization of power electronic systems.
