Proxima Fusion in Zürich seeks a Mid-level Magnet Prototyping Engineer to support development of joint and cable technologies for magnet prototypes. The role involves hands-on prototyping, manufacturing, and testing at labs in Villigen and Böttstein, focusing on mechanical and electro-mechanical components for future high-temperature superconducting magnets.
This role supports the development of joint and cable technologies for Proxima’s magnet programme, focusing on prototyping, manufacturing, and testing at labs in Villigen and Böttstein. It plays a central part in designing, fabricating, and refining components for magnet prototypes and future HTS magnets, operating at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and experimental engineering to enable rapid iteration and integration into test setups.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical and electro-mechanical parts for joint and busbar systems
- Create and test early-stage concepts for superconducting cables
- Construct, assemble, and evaluate prototypes in collaboration with the workshop team
- Assist in manufacturing and integrating components into magnet prototypes and experimental setups
- Refine designs based on test data, measurements, and feedback from experiments
- Help develop manufacturing methods and tooling for joint production
- Take part in experimental work, including setup, instrumentation, and data collection
- Work with engineers and technicians across mechanical, electrical, and materials disciplines
Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Proven hands-on experience in prototyping, manufacturing, or experimental work
- Experience using CAD tools, preferably CATIA; NX, SolidWorks, or Onshape are also acceptable
- Solid grasp of electrical or electromagnetic systems, including current flow, resistive losses, and basic circuit behavior
- Comfortable working in workshop and lab environments
- Practical, solution-focused mindset with the ability to iterate quickly
- Strong team player capable of collaborating across technical domains
Nice to have
- Experience with electromechanical systems, sensors, or instrumentation
- Familiarity with manufacturing techniques such as machining, assembly, or soldering
- Background in R&D or prototype development settings
- Exposure to thermal, electrical, or materials characterization methods
