Designer for Superconducting Magnet Development 80-100%

The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen PSI is seeking a Junior Designer for Superconducting Magnet Development (80-100%, fixed-term, on-site). The role focuses on mechanical CAD design, prototype construction, and coil winding for high-temperature superconducting magnets.

This position centers on the mechanical design and physical build of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. The successful candidate will lead and participate in manufacturing and assembling prototypes, while also developing processes and hands-on techniques for winding superconducting coils.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical CAD design and build prototypes for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets.
• Lead and assist in the manufacturing and assembly of designed prototypes.
• Develop processes and contribute hands-on to the winding of superconducting coils.
• Carry out conventional machining tasks such as drilling, turning, and milling for simple parts.
• Handle the procurement of parts and raw materials.

Requirements

• Successfully completed vocational training as a designer (Konstrukteur*in) or equivalent education/experience.
• Strong practical skills and familiarity with prototype development and construction.
• Experience in the procurement of parts.
• Good command of English.

• German language skills.
• Experience with 3D printing (FFF).
