ABB Power Grids in Lenzburg seeks an R&D Intern for semiconductor power modules. This 6-9 month role focuses on packaging technology development and prototype characterization for energy applications.
This internship takes place within the Semiconductors business unit in Lenzburg, Switzerland. The position supports the creation and production of advanced power modules used in rail transport, renewable energy, eMobility, and power transmission. The engagement lasts between six and nine months.
Responsibilities
- Create novel packaging solutions for power electronics to improve current capacity and thermal resilience in demanding environments.
- Assist in assembling and testing IGBT module prototypes using methods like scanning acoustic microscopy, cross-sectioning, and electrical reliability checks.
- Execute design of experiments to refine processes and materials for technology advancement.
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team that provides supervision and guidance throughout the project.
Requirements
- Enrolled in a B.Sc. or M.Sc. program in material sciences, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory procedures, including sample preparation and material characterization.
- Fluent proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Strong analytical abilities with creative problem-solving skills to address technical issues independently.
- Clear communication skills for documenting designs and presenting findings to colleagues.
- Self-motivated attitude with a strong work ethic, capable of working autonomously or collaboratively.
- Openness to acquiring new knowledge regarding semiconductor packaging technologies.
