Amazon Switzerland seeks a Mid-level Data Center Technician in Zürich to maintain and troubleshoot AWS cloud infrastructure hardware and systems.
This position sits within Data Center Operations, a team responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS’s global infrastructure. The role focuses on maintaining the world’s largest cloud computing infrastructure, working directly within high-tech facilities to support regional cloud technology advancements.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize and resolve system trouble tickets to ensure high reliability.
- Serve as the primary technical escalation point for hardware issues across systems and networks.
- Diagnose and fix technical problems on various platforms, including Linux servers.
- Address physical layer outages for both systems and network equipment.
- Install and configure server racks in accordance with internal service level agreements.
- Perform physical replacements of server and network components.
- Act as the main point of contact for high-severity incidents within the data center.
- Participate in data center power and cooling events.
- Collaborate with third-party vendors and contractors.
- Share knowledge and mentor less technical staff on best practices.
- Contribute to team building by participating in hiring processes and candidate interviews.
- Adhere strictly to security and safety protocols within the facility.
- Meet 24/7 on-call rotation requirements and response times.
Requirements
- Proven experience in hardware troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of boot processes including POST, BIOS, PXE, Kickstart, GRUB/LILO, and RAID.
- Understanding of network protocols such as TCP/IP and Ethernet.
- Ability to troubleshoot Layer 2 and Layer 3 network issues.
- Experience with network hardware, including copper and optical fiber cabling, switches, and routers.
- Strong communication skills.
- A genuine passion for IT infrastructure and hardware.
Nice to have
- Experience with remote access tools like console routers, IPMI, and BMC.
- Knowledge of network equipment installation and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of redundancy systems, including power feeds, ATS, server hardware, RAID, and network connectivity.
- Familiarity with data center operations such as inventory management, hot/cold aisles, and security.
- Proficiency in Excel for data manipulation, charting, and diagram creation.
- Experience in project management.
- Knowledge of AWS products such as EC2, EBS, and S3.
- Scripting experience in Bash, Python, Perl, Ruby, or similar programming languages.
