The International Committee of the Red Cross is seeking a Detention Doctor in Geneva to provide medical care to detainees, ensuring their health and dignity in line with international humanitarian law.

This position focuses on delivering essential medical services to individuals held in detention facilities. The role requires conducting thorough medical examinations, diagnosing conditions, and providing necessary treatments while upholding the highest standards of medical ethics and human dignity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed health evaluations for detainees upon arrival and throughout their stay.
  • Administer medical care for both sudden and long-term health issues.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and ensure respectful treatment of all individuals.
  • Coordinate with ICRC personnel and local officials to maintain health standards within detention centers.
  • Record all medical procedures and keep precise patient files.
  • Notify relevant ICRC departments of any health issues or ethical concerns.

Requirements

  • Hold a medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Possess a valid medical license to practice in Switzerland or another relevant jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrate fluency in English and French (or Italian).

Nice to have

  • Background in emergency medicine, internal medicine, or general practice is advantageous.
  • Solid understanding of international humanitarian law and medical ethics.
  • Strong communication abilities and experience working in diverse, multicultural settings.
