Doctoral student position - Evaluating novel mineral sources for treatment of micronutrient deficiencies in humans

ETH Zurich seeks a doctoral student to evaluate novel mineral sources, such as microalgae, for treating human micronutrient deficiencies through clinical trials. The role is part of a joint research initiative between the Laboratory of Epigenetics, Nutrition and Metabolism and the Sustainable Food Processing Group.

This position supports a joint research effort between ETH Zurich’s Laboratory of Epigenetics, Nutrition and Metabolism and the Sustainable Food Processing Group, focusing on microalgae and plant-based foods in human nutrition. The project explores sustainable, mineral-rich food sources to combat global micronutrient deficiencies, with an emphasis on in vivo absorption and bioavailability studies.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out clinical trials to assess how well novel mineral sources, including microalgae, are absorbed and utilized by the human body.
  • Work alongside a leading research team focused on microalgae and plant-based foods in human nutrition and health.
  • Use advanced research equipment within a collaborative and open research environment.
  • Help prepare research papers and present findings at scientific events.
  • Engage in training and networking opportunities related to sustainable food and nutrition.

Requirements

  • A highly motivated doctoral candidate with a solid academic foundation in nutrition, food science, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience or a strong interest in clinical research, human nutrition, or bioavailability studies.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is beneficial.
