ETH Zurich offers a full-time, on-site PhD position in Zürich focused on UV-induced skin aging and biomarker technologies. The role involves bioanalysis, multi-omic integration, and DNA sequencing to study genome instability and oxidative stress.

The research group at ETH Zurich investigates how physical and chemical exposures, including environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and medications, contribute to genome instability and cellular metabolism. The team aims to understand the biochemical mechanisms behind the safety and function of food, drugs, and personal care products. This PhD position focuses on UV-induced skin aging and the development of biomarker technologies for prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Create and utilize bioanalysis methods to map DNA damage at a single-base level.
  • Combine various multi-omic techniques to analyze DNA damage within the framework of genome structure and activity.
  • Investigate the mechanistic impact of DNA damage on aging and disease processes.
  • Broaden the scope of research to identify biomarkers associated with aging, which is driven by DNA damage.
  • Employ DNA sequencing and associated techniques to examine cellular reactions to stress and interventions.
  • Analyze data alongside gene expression and DNA methylation characteristics using bioinformatics tools.

Requirements

  • Hold an MSc degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Science, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Exhibit a self-dependent mindset, good leadership qualities, and a strong foundation of practical relevant laboratory experience.

Nice to have

  • Possess bioinformatics skills.
  • Excel in the chemical biology of nucleic acids, genomic sequencing, in vitro toxicology, or related topics.
