Novartis Pharma Schweiz AG seeks a Research Scientist II or Senior Scientist I in Toxicology (Basel, hybrid). The role focuses on gene therapy toxicology research, mechanistic genome integrity evaluation, and regulatory support.

This position is dedicated to advancing toxicology research for gene therapies, with a specific emphasis on supporting regulatory assessments. The scientist will conduct mechanistic evaluations of genome integrity following the application of gene therapy modalities, ensuring safety and efficacy through rigorous scientific inquiry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in vitro experiments to assess the genotoxicity of gene therapies (such as AAVs and lentiviruses) for regulatory purposes.
  • Evaluate the impact of gene therapy modalities on genome integrity through mechanistic studies.
  • Produce, analyze, and interpret experimental data to inform nonclinical safety assessments.
  • Develop and refine strategies for integration site analysis (ISA) and interpret the resulting data.
  • Design and carry out cell-based assays to study DNA damage and mechanisms related to viral integration.
  • Implement cutting-edge technologies and systems for genetic toxicity testing across various therapeutic areas.
  • Work with internal specialists and external partners to align on study designs and data interpretation.
  • Document and communicate findings through reports, presentations, and regulatory summaries.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in cellular biology, molecular biology, toxicology, or a related field (PhD not required).
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, including primary cells and established cell lines.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR-based methods, and library preparation for sequencing.
  • Basic programming skills for data analysis (e.g., R, Python).
  • Strong ability to interpret data and maintain attention to detail.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team.
  • Effective communication skills, including presenting findings, preparing manuscripts, and collaborating with others.
  • A proactive and flexible mindset, with enthusiasm for addressing non-routine scientific challenges.
  • Ability to adhere to Good Laboratory Science standards, as well as Safety, Health, and Environment standards.

Nice to have

  • Experience with gene therapy systems (e.g., AAV, lentiviral vectors, CRISPR/Cas9).
  • Familiarity with CRISPR/Cas9 editing techniques.
  • Experience with DNA damage/repair readouts (e.g., γH2AX, western blot, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry).
  • Knowledge of karyotyping, molecular karyotyping, and advanced cytogenetics (FISH, SKY).
  • Understanding of genome safety concepts (integration, clonal expansion, tumorigenicity).
  • Exposure to primary human cells (e.g., hepatocytes) and/or advanced in vitro models.
  • Awareness of the regulatory context for nonclinical safety.
