CERN seeks an Entry Level FPGA Developer for its Radio Frequency Group in Geneva. The role involves designing digital LLRF cavity controllers and requires strong skills in FPGA firmware and Python.

This position sits within the Accelerator Systems Department, specifically the Radio Frequency Group, which manages the RF acceleration and deflecting systems for the entire CERN accelerator complex. The successful candidate will help design, prototype, and implement a next-generation digital LLRF cavity controller, contributing to ongoing performance upgrades and system consolidation.

Responsibilities

  • Create FPGA firmware that executes real-time algorithms for phase, amplitude, and resonance tuning.
  • Build and integrate firmware modules along with fast diagnostic subsystems.
  • Write Python tools and frameworks to automate hardware testing, characterize parameters, and analyze laboratory data.
  • Assist in the integration, lab validation, and commissioning of new low-level cavity controllers.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in FPGA design and firmware development, with a preference for VHDL.
  • Familiarity with standard FPGA development, verification, and debugging environments.
  • Strong programming abilities in Python or a comparable language for test automation and data analysis.
  • Solid understanding of digital design principles and FPGA development, ideally using VHDL or Verilog.
  • Capability to troubleshoot and validate mixed-signal hardware systems.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, plus a commitment to learn French.
  • Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • A Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering (or related field) with 2–6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with up to 3 years of post-graduation experience.
  • No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract history.

Nice to have

  • Experience modeling or simulating digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms or control loops.
  • Exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) concepts, basic control theory (like PID loops), or electronics hardware debugging.
  • Familiarity with hardware testing and developing automated test benches for hardware validation.
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing techniques, such as digital filtering, mixing, or I/Q modulation/demodulation.
  • Understanding of basic feedback control systems and control theory.
  • Familiarity with version control workflows using Git and continuous integration (CI).
