Head of Neurodegeneration, Translational Medicine

Novartis seeks a Head of Neurodegeneration in Translational Medicine, based in Basel, Switzerland, for a full-time hybrid role. The position requires an MD and PhD with clinical neurology training and 10+ years in translational medicine or early clinical development, to lead global neurodegeneration programs from discovery through Phase IIa.

This role leads the translational strategy for neurodegeneration programs within Novartis’ Translational Medicine division, connecting research, early clinical development, and biomarker innovation to advance therapeutic assets from discovery through proof-of-concept and into full development. The position oversees global, cross-functional teams to design and execute cutting-edge translational approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the long-term translational strategy for the Neurodegeneration Pillar, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with broader business and translational medicine goals.
  • Act as a senior expert and advisor in neurodegenerative disorders, guiding program design, biomarker development, and patient-focused endpoints.
  • Lead global translational teams across Phase I–IIa, overseeing the execution of high-quality development strategies in one or more neurodegeneration indications.
  • Represent Translational Medicine on global program teams and decision boards, ensuring programs meet quality, regulatory, and differentiation standards.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of First-in-Human and Phase IIa studies, collaborating with clinical, regulatory, biomarker, and profiling partners.
  • Lead the development of key clinical documents such as Clinical Trial Protocols, Investigator’s Brochures, Clinical Study Reports, and regulatory submissions, ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Promote a culture of empowerment, innovation, and collaboration within Translational Medicine and across broader business units.
  • Mentor and support the growth of scientific talent in translational and clinical roles.
  • Manage interactions with external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, key opinion leaders, data monitoring committees, and advisory boards, as well as internal Novartis stakeholders.
  • Participate in evaluations and due diligence for neurodegeneration and related therapeutic areas.

Requirements

  • Must hold an MD and PhD with clinical subspecialty training in neurological diseases and deep expertise in neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in translational medicine, early clinical development, or experimental therapeutics.
  • Proven track record in leading complex global programs and cross-functional scientific teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape development strategies, execute early clinical trials, and influence regulatory submissions to support product differentiation.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech company is strongly preferred.
