The University of Zurich offers a part-time PhD position focused on ammonoid phylogeny and macroecology, utilizing Bayesian frameworks and collaborative research.
This doctoral project aims to construct an ammonoid phylogeny within a Bayesian framework. The successful candidate will work closely with the project leader, two postdoctoral researchers, and a network of international collaborators to advance our understanding of these ancient marine organisms.
Responsibilities
- Define morphological characters for matrices used to study ammonoid evolution.
- Select a large group of ammonoids for scoring representative taxa.
- Conduct Bayesian and parsimony analyses.
- Integrate analyses into an ammonoid supertree.
- Investigate additional aspects of ammonoids, such as dimorphism or variability.
Requirements
- Highly motivated student of Life- or Earth Sciences with a biological, geological or palaeontological background.
- Excellent writing skills in English.
- Some computational skills or experience with statistics.
Nice to have
- Knowledge in working with methods to reconstruct phylogenies such as Bayesian and parsimony.
- Knowledge on ammonoid palaeobiology.
- German language skills.
