The University of Zurich offers a part-time PhD position focused on ammonoid phylogeny and macroecology, utilizing Bayesian frameworks and morphological character analysis.
This doctoral project aims to construct a comprehensive ammonoid phylogeny within a Bayesian framework. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the project leader, two postdoctoral researchers, and a broad network of international experts to advance understanding of these ancient marine organisms.
Responsibilities
- Define morphological characters for matrices used to study ammonoid evolution
- Select a large group of ammonoids and score representative taxa
- Conduct Bayesian and parsimony analyses
- Integrate analyses into an ammonoid supertree
- Study additional aspects of ammonoids, such as dimorphism or variability
Requirements
- Highly motivated student of Life- or Earth Sciences with a biological, geological or palaeontological background
- Excellent writing skills in English are required
- Some computational skills or experience with statistics are expected
Nice to have
- Knowledge in working with methods to reconstruct phylogenies such as Bayesian and parsimony
- Knowledge on ammonoid palaeobiology would also be very helpful
- German language skills are an asset in daily life in and around the university
