The University of Bern offers a full-time PhD position focused on modeling how extreme events like volcanic eruptions impact Earth's climate and biosphere across different historical periods.

This doctoral role involves investigating the effects of major disturbances, such as meteorite impacts and large volcanic eruptions, on the Earth's climate and biosphere. The successful candidate will analyze these impacts across various Earth system configurations that represent different stages of planetary history.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute specific climate simulations for various Earth system setups
  • Model the coupled interactions between climate and the carbon cycle using the GFDL ESM
  • Share findings at scientific conferences held nationally and internationally
  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed academic journals

Requirements

  • Hold a Master's degree in climate science, physics, oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, Earth sciences, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrate excellent proficiency in both written and spoken English

Nice to have

  • Prior experience with climate modeling, programming, and analyzing large datasets
  • Understanding of the climate system and global biogeochemical cycles
