PhD - Multimodal Generative AI for Materials Design

PhD position at EPFL focused on developing generative AI methodologies for novel materials design within an ERC Synergy project. The role involves research, experimentation, and collaboration with materials scientists.

This PhD project aims to create innovative generative AI techniques for designing new materials. It is part of a large ERC Synergy project that combines de novo simulations with AI-driven automated experimental platforms. The position provides a unique chance to work alongside materials scientists to establish a new framework for materials discovery, spanning computational methods to synthesis and characterization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and complete an independent dissertation
  • Conduct research in close partnership with academic collaborators
  • Design and carry out experiments
  • Analyze and interpret experimental outcomes
  • Draft and submit scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals
  • Deliver presentations at international conferences
  • Oversee student projects

Requirements

  • Hold an excellent MSc degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrate proficiency in generative deep learning, particularly latent diffusion, multimodal methods, statistics, and learning theory, or show a strong willingness to acquire these skills
  • Exhibit self-motivation, strong problem-solving capabilities, and creative thinking
  • Be eager to explore, implement, and test new AI architectures
  • Participate actively in a collaborative international research effort involving experts from various fields
  • Possess professional-level English proficiency in both written and spoken communication
  • Successfully apply and gain admission to the doctoral program in Electrical Engineering
