PhD on Quantum Computing × AI for Optimization

This PhD role lies at the intersection of quantum computing, machine learning, and combinatorial optimization, aiming to explore AI-discovered quantum algorithms and quantum training data. It leverages collaboration between ETH Zurich and IBM Research Zurich to address fundamental research questions with real-world applications.

Responsibilities

• Apply AI techniques to optimize quantum circuit parameters and design algorithms for quantum optimization, extending beyond QUBO formulations for QAOA
• Create AI-based approaches to discover new quantum optimization algorithms
• Produce quantum-generated samples to initialize classical AI solvers or generate quantum-enhanced features and embeddings

Requirements

• Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, quantum computing, or machine learning
• Strong interest in theoretical or computational methods for optimization, quantum computing, and machine learning
• Demonstrated leadership abilities
• Proficient coding skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural teams
• Strong interpersonal skills for positive collaboration across different backgrounds
