ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate to develop microfluidic systems for creating synthetic cells capable of energy production, nutrient metabolism, and molecular transport. The position requires an MSc in chemistry, biophysics, or bio-engineering and fluent English skills.
This PhD role focuses on engineering synthetic cells by developing microfluidic platforms to reconstitute functional membrane proteins into lipid vesicles, enabling autonomous regulation of energy metabolism, biochemical synthesis, and nutrient transport.
Responsibilities
- Design and set up microfluidic systems for producing uniform synthetic vesicles with adjustable membrane characteristics
- Create microfluidic methods to integrate membrane proteins into synthetic vesicle membranes
- Collaborate with research groups in Zurich and Bern, including setting up microfluidic devices and preparing fluorescently labeled membrane proteins
- Conduct super-resolution microscopy to analyze membrane protein distribution in synthetic vesicles
Requirements
- Hold an MSc degree in chemistry, biophysics, chemical engineering, or bio-engineering with top academic performance
- Demonstrate strong written and presentation skills in English

- Prior experience in microfabrication, microfluidics, biophysics, or cell biology is advantageous
