PhD student position -Interfacial Imaging of Membrane Water

Full-time PhD position at EPFL's Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics to develop imaging technology for studying osmotic pressure and cell membrane tension. Collaboration with University of Geneva under ERC Synergy Grant R2-Tension.

This full-time PhD role is based at EPFL's Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP). The position focuses on creating new imaging technologies and conducting experiments to investigate how osmotic pressure and cell membrane tension are controlled at the molecular level. The project is a joint effort between EPFL (Prof. S. Roke) and the University of Geneva (Prof. A. Roux), funded by the ERC Synergy Grant R2-Tension.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the entire dissertation process independently
  • Conduct research alongside industry collaborators
  • Design and carry out experiments
  • Process and interpret experimental data
  • Draft scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals
  • Deliver presentations at global conferences
  • Engage in teaching activities and mentor student projects

Requirements

  • Hold a Master of Science degree
  • Demonstrate fluent English proficiency
  • Possess strong communication abilities and a collaborative mindset
  • Show enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, eagerness to learn, strong organizational skills, and rigor in experimental work
  • Display high motivation for academic research

Nice to have

  • Background in nonlinear optics, microscopy, or ultrafast spectroscopy
  • Proficiency in French, German, or Italian
