ETH Zurich seeks a PhD candidate to lead the end-to-end development of musculoskeletal soft robots, integrating mechanical design, actuation, fabrication, electronics, and control. The role emphasizes hands-on experimentation and bio-inspired robotics in an interdisciplinary research environment.
This PhD position focuses on creating flexible, dexterous, and adaptable robotic systems inspired by biological musculoskeletal structures. The candidate will lead the full development cycle—from design and fabrication to real-world testing—across multiple engineering disciplines to build complete soft robots.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end development of musculoskeletal soft robots, including design, fabrication, and real-world testing.
- Integrate mechanical design, soft actuation, fabrication techniques, electronics, and control systems to build complete robotic systems.
- Conduct iterative, hands-on experiments to ensure robots function effectively in real-world conditions.
- Contribute to the creation of robots inspired by biological systems, emphasizing flexibility, dexterity, and adaptability.
Requirements
- A Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Proven hands-on experience in building physical systems, including prototyping, CAD, fabrication (e.g. 3D printing, machining, molding), electronics, or robot integration.
- A preference for practical experimentation—building, testing, iterating quickly—over simulation-only work.
- Working knowledge in actuation, mechanism design, control, or embedded systems, with a willingness to expand across the full robotics stack.
- Prior research experience, demonstrated through a Master’s thesis, research project, or similar, with strong written and spoken English skills.
- Strong motivation for interdisciplinary, experimental research and a curiosity to acquire new skills throughout the PhD.
- A collaborative mindset and drive to make meaningful contributions through research.
Nice to have
- Background or interest in soft robotics, bio-inspired design, or musculoskeletal systems.
