Eawag offers a four-year, SNSF-funded PhD position within the BioTesselate project to model human impacts on biodiversity. Based in Dübendorf with ties to the University of Zurich, this full-time role focuses on geospatial machine learning and ecological forecasting.
This doctoral candidate will join the group of Florian Altermatt, operating from a shared base between Eawag and the University of Zurich. The role is embedded in the Ecology PhD program of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School and centers on the SNSF-funded BioTesselate project. The primary objective is to address how human activities affect biodiversity across different spatial scales by developing integrated global models.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain a comprehensive database tracking human influences on biodiversity.
- Utilize modeling pipelines to create the first continuous, global layer representing human impact on biodiversity.
- Analyze various scenarios based on different socioeconomic pathways and restoration goals.
- Develop and apply geospatial machine learning methods for forecasting biodiversity trends.
- Work closely with the Altermatt laboratory and the broader project team.
Requirements
- Hold a Master’s degree in Ecology, Biodiversity Science, Environmental Science, Quantitative Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrate strong quantitative analytical abilities.
- Be proficient in at least one programming language.
- Possess a solid grasp of ecological theory.
- Communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in biodiversity data analysis, spatial data handling, GIS, machine learning, or ecological modeling.
- Familiarity with literature synthesis, meta-analysis techniques, open-science workflows, or large-scale data analysis.
