PhD student: Pulmonary outcomes and lung function after childhood cancer

The University of Bern seeks a PhD student to lead a multicentre cohort study on pulmonary outcomes in childhood cancer survivors, preparing candidates for clinical or academic research careers.

This position is embedded within an international, interdisciplinary network and is designed to prepare the holder for a future research career in clinical settings, universities, or public health institutions. The doctoral work also counts partially toward medical training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage an ongoing prospective multicentre cohort study across University Children’s Hospitals in Bern, Basel, and Geneva.
  • Partner with study nurses, paediatric oncologists, and pulmonologists to facilitate patient recruitment and clinical assessments.
  • Gather and merge clinical, treatment, and pulmonary function data from various sources.
  • Utilize and expand expertise in epidemiological research, data management, and statistical analysis.
  • Share findings at national and international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

  • A university degree, preferably in medicine (MD), though degrees in physiotherapy or physiology are also considered.
  • Fluency in English and German and/or French, with proficiency in all three languages being ideal.

Nice to have

  • A strong interest in respiratory diseases, epidemiology, and paediatric oncology.
  • Prior clinical experience.
  • A keen interest in epidemiology and biostatistics, ideally with hands-on data analysis experience.
