Research Fellowship (Experimental Physics)

CERN in Geneva is offering a permanent Research Fellowship in Experimental Physics for early-career scientists with a PhD to lead independent research programmes within its experimental groups.

The successful candidate will join one of CERN’s experimental physics groups to develop and lead their own research programme at the frontier of particle physics. This role involves working in a highly collaborative and international environment, contributing to the organization's broader experimental physics programme using large-scale scientific instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research in experimental physics within a chosen CERN research group.
  • Utilize CERN’s large-scale scientific instruments to contribute to the experimental physics programme.
  • Collaborate with physicists and engineers on studies of particle interactions and related research activities.
  • Develop and pursue personal research interests within the framework of the Fellowship.
  • Analyse data, contribute to detector design, construction and/or operations, and engage in the design, execution and interpretation of physics data analyses.
  • Participate in CERN’s vibrant scientific community through seminars, workshops, training activities and collaborative projects.

Requirements

  • Hold a strong background in experimental particle physics or a closely related field.
  • Have research experience aligned with the scientific activities carried out at CERN’s experimental facilities.
  • Hold a PhD (or will obtain it within six months by the application deadline).
  • Have no more than 6 years’ research experience after completion of your PhD degree.
  • Be a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State.
  • Have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
