Research position at the Center for AI in Radiation Oncology (CAIRO) – Medical Data Semantics

The company seeks a researcher to develop medical data semantics and AI-driven extraction systems at the Center for AI in Radiation Oncology in Bern.

This role sits within the Center for AI in Radiation Oncology (CAIRO), where the successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team bridging medicine and computer science. The position focuses on structuring oncology data and applying advanced AI techniques to transform unstructured clinical information into robust, standardized formats.

Responsibilities

• Design and build comprehensive data models and structured information systems for oncology.
• Standardize clinical, physical, biological, and technical data by implementing Common Data Elements (CDEs).
• Create automated systems using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract, manage, and analyze unstructured medical records.
• Utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) and agentic AI frameworks to automate data extraction processes.
• Perform retrospective analyses of clinical data to support ongoing AI and clinical initiatives within CAIRO.
• Translate complex medical workflows into technical data structures, acting as a liaison between clinical requirements and engineering execution.

Requirements

• An MD, M.Sc., or PhD in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Medicine, Computational Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Dual expertise combining strong technical skills in data engineering or data science with substantial medical or clinical knowledge.
• Proven experience in data semantics, data definition, and the structuring of health data.
• Strong background in machine learning and deep learning, specifically applying NLP and LLMs to medical or biological datasets.
• Fluent proficiency in English for both speaking and writing.

Nice to have

• A portfolio of software, open-source projects, or AI platforms, such as those hosted on GitHub.
• Prior experience working within clinical oncology workflows or comprehensive cancer centers.
