Novartis seeks a Senior Research Scientist to lead DNA-encoded library (DEL) screening efforts within its Biomedical Research division in Basel, focusing on early-stage drug discovery.

This position sits within the Biomedical Research division, which serves as the innovation engine for Novartis by developing novel therapeutic approaches. The role is embedded in a collaborative group at the intersection of biology and chemistry, dedicated to accelerating the discovery and optimization of low molecular weight drugs, radioligand therapeutics, siRNAs, and other emerging modalities using advanced technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all experimental components of DEL screening for early drug discovery initiatives, including the synthesis and preparation of essential reagents.
  • Run DEL screening campaigns, interpret the resulting data, identify when protocols are failing, and provide troubleshooting support.
  • Drive experimental innovation by refining existing DEL selection methods to accommodate emerging therapeutic modalities.
  • Analyze experimental outcomes and present findings during internal team meetings.
  • Collaborate closely within multidisciplinary project teams to foster a constructive and productive work environment.

Requirements

  • Hold an MS-equivalent degree in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology, or possess a BS/apprenticeship combined with relevant drug discovery experience.
  • Demonstrate strong wet-lab expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or biophysics, with a specific focus on handling and analyzing oligonucleotides and proteins.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills in English.

Nice to have

  • An interdisciplinary interest bridging chemistry, biology, and technology.
  • Practical or theoretical knowledge of encoded library screening techniques, such as DEL, mRNA display, or phage display.
  • Experience using and developing computational tools for analyzing large datasets.
  • Background in identifying and characterizing low molecular weight and peptide ligands.
  • Programming skills related to lab automation and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly productive, fast-paced environment.
