ABB seeks a (Senior) Scientist in Converter-Based Distribution Systems for its Research Center in Baden-Daettwil, Switzerland. The role focuses on advancing power electronics and microgrid integration, translating research into next-generation products. Candidates must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering with expertise in power electronics and strong research credentials.

This position is part of ABB Research Center in Baden-Dättwil, where the team drives innovation at the intersection of power electronic converters and microgrid integration. The role involves developing cutting-edge technologies that shape the future of ABB’s product portfolio, bridging academic research and industrial applications.

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative concepts for low- and medium-voltage AC and DC distribution systems using power electronic converters.
• Perform simulations, algorithm development, and lab experiments; publish research results and file patents for new solutions.
• Collaborate with global, multidisciplinary research teams within ABB.
• Partner with ABB business units to transition research into practical applications such as data centers, renewable integration, industrial electrification, e-mining, and marine systems.

Requirements

• PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power electronics, power systems, or control.
• Demonstrated research excellence through high-impact publications and patents.
• Strong technical knowledge in power electronic converter topologies, modulation and control, converter interactions, passive components, protection devices, and microgrid modeling, optimization, and stability analysis.
• Practical lab experience in designing, building, and testing converter systems and protection schemes, with a self-driven approach.
• Ability to succeed in a fast-paced industrial research setting and deliver results.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
