Staff Software Engineer, EAA CX

Coinbase seeks a Staff Software Engineer to lead the evolution of its Control Center platform into an AI-agent-ready operations system, focusing on architecture, security, and backend reliability.

This position sits within the Customer Administration Engineering team under the Enterprise Applications and Architecture organization. The engineer will serve as the technical anchor during a pivotal transition, guiding the Control Center platform from a traditional user interface toward a modular, headless architecture capable of supporting AI agents and automated workflows for thousands of internal users.

Responsibilities

• Define and deliver core platform capabilities, including tool registries, AI orchestration layers, risk-based access automation, and contribution models for distributed teams.
• Architect the platform's shift toward an AI-ready state by designing procedure constructs, establishing guardrails for agentic behavior, implementing human-in-the-loop orchestration, and creating evaluation frameworks.
• Set the technical vision for the group, writing technical design documents, conducting design reviews, breaking down complex projects, and mentoring other engineers.
• Develop robust, secure distributed backend services, managing service level objectives, observability tools, incident management, and operational preparedness.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering, Security Engineering, and other Enterprise Applications teams to deliver shared platform primitives and achieve cross-functional goals.

Requirements

• Over eight years of software engineering experience with a history of designing and launching large-scale, high-traffic distributed systems.
• Strong expertise in backend service design, API development using gRPC, MCP, and GraphQL, and building scalable microservices.
• Ability to independently steer ambiguous, high-impact technical projects from initial concept through to production deployment.
• Practical experience with cloud-native tools such as AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, event-driven systems like Kafka and MQ, distributed caching, and SQL or NoSQL databases.
• Proven background in creating secure, compliant internal platforms with a focus on security controls, access management, audit logging, and data governance.
• Experience working with agentic AI systems, including MCP servers, LLM orchestration, RAG pipelines, human-in-the-loop workflows, or evaluation and guardrail frameworks.
• Proficiency in Go and the ability to work with Python.
