Trainee for computational and experimental studies of Plasma Discharge Devices for Advanced Beam Manipulation

Paul Scherrer Institut · Villigen PSI

The Paul Scherrer Institut seeks a full-time intern for computational and experimental work on plasma discharge devices for beam manipulation in Villigen.

This internship supports the Electron Beam Instrumentation Group, which designs instruments for measuring electron beam properties and conducts advanced accelerator research. The position centers on studying plasma discharge devices to improve beam manipulation, with the possibility of evolving into a Master's thesis for dedicated candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and refining plasma-based tools for beam control, specifically Active Plasma Lenses.
  • Run multiphysics simulations, including computational fluid dynamics, to improve neutral gas distribution inside plasma capillaries.
  • Analyze acoustic data to better manage the transverse density profile of the gas.
  • Build a Particle-in-Cell simulation framework to investigate and reduce beam-plasma wakefield effects during propagation.
  • Help construct the experimental setup for plasma discharges or take part in measurement campaigns.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in physics, engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • In the final year of an undergraduate degree, having completed at least four semesters.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD and CFD software.
  • Strong coding skills in Python.
  • Knowledge of GPU-accelerated numerical simulation techniques.
  • A natural aptitude for computational physics and analyzing data.
  • Must not have yet finished a Master's thesis.

What the company offers

  • Gain practical experience within a leading research laboratory setting.
  • Potential to expand the internship into a Master's thesis project.
  • Fixed-term contract lasting three months.
