Data Engineer

Coherent Switzerland AG seeks a Junior Data Engineer in Zürich to build and maintain data pipelines connecting production systems with business applications using Databricks, Python, and SQL.

Positioned within the Laser Business Unit, this role focuses on developing, maintaining, and enhancing data pipelines that link production equipment, operational systems, and business applications. The primary objective is to ensure data remains accessible, reliable, and usable for teams spanning R&D, production, operations, and analytics, working across both on-premises and cloud environments with a strong emphasis on practical data engineering and Databricks.

Responsibilities

• Build and sustain scalable data pipelines to facilitate integration across hybrid on-premises and cloud settings.
• Execute and oversee ETL processes, guaranteeing data accuracy and consistency via automated workflows.
• Consolidate data from production machinery, operational systems, and other sources to make it available to various business teams.
• Partner with cross-functional groups to support and refine data storage solutions in both on-premises and cloud environments.
• Leverage Databricks and associated technologies for data processing and analytical tasks.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize pipelines to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Uphold data quality standards and governance practices across all platforms.
• Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to advance data-driven initiatives and provide technical guidance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
• At least one year of hands-on data engineering experience in a production setting, preferably with hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation and automation.
• Experience with relational databases, specifically Microsoft SQL Server.
• Solid understanding of data modeling, including schema design and normalization.
• Proven experience in developing and managing data pipelines within production environments.
• Familiarity with Databricks or comparable platforms for scalable data processing and analytics.
• Knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git.
• Understanding of data quality and governance principles.

Nice to have

• Experience with AWS or Azure, especially in hybrid on-premises and cloud environments.
• Familiarity with pipeline orchestration tools like Apache Airflow.
• Experience with Apache Spark, CI/CD tools, data lakehouse architecture, or NoSQL databases.
• Background in the semiconductor or manufacturing industry.
