Junior Data Engineer (m/f/d)

Join Hilo By Aktiia as a Junior Data Engineer in Neuchâtel. You will build and maintain data pipelines within a Databricks Lakehouse to support clinical and operational data integration across the company.

This position focuses on evolving the organization’s data infrastructure from a research-focused setup into a comprehensive enterprise platform. The engineer will be responsible for ingesting and centralizing diverse data sources, including clinical records and legacy systems, while transforming them into reliable assets for algorithm development and machine learning teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and sustain data processing workflows within the Databricks medallion Lakehouse architecture.
• Manage the collection, consolidation, and documentation of clinical information currently stored in various systems like Castor, RedCap, and standalone archives.
• Analyze complex or disorganized datasets to identify patterns and convert them into structured, usable data resources.
• Create preprocessing and ETL/ELT workflows that deliver clean, model-ready datasets to Data Science, ML, and Core Tech groups.
• Establish and enforce standards for data quality, validation, traceability, and documentation for sensitive clinical information.
• Set up logging, validation checks, and alerting mechanisms for new pipelines, while adhering to collaborative coding practices like Git, code reviews, CI/CD, and testing.
• Assist in expanding the lakehouse from specific technical projects to a full company-wide infrastructure, collaborating with senior engineers, ML specialists, and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum of one year of post-graduation experience in data engineering, infrastructure, or related hands-on technical roles.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, along with practical experience using Databricks.
• Familiarity with cloud environments, preferably AWS.
• Understanding of ETL/ELT pipeline design, data ingestion methods, and data modeling concepts.
• Experience working with shared codebases using Git, code reviews, CI/CD, or testing practices.
• Highly proficient English language skills.
• Residency in Switzerland with the ability to work in a hybrid model, including one day per week on-site in Neuchâtel.

Nice to have

• Experience with Spark, Delta Lake, or Parquet.
• Background in start-up, scale-up, or technically demanding environments where hands-on work across the data pipeline was required.
• Exposure to regulated or data-sensitive industries such as MedTech, Pharma, FinTech, or healthcare.
• French language skills.
