SHL Medical AG seeks a Design Engineer for Platform Development in Zug, focusing on autoinjector design, mechanical engineering, and cross-functional collaboration in a hybrid role.

The company is looking for a Design Engineer to join its Platform Development department, where the primary focus is supporting the design aspects of an autoinjector product platform. This position demands strong mechanical design capabilities and the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams to ensure the platform remains reliable, compliant, and competitive. The role involves sustaining engineering efforts, continuous improvement initiatives, and contributing to the overall success of the product line in evolving markets.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute device design tasks for the platform, including refining device architecture, establishing engineering requirements, and creating 3D/2D models.
  • Conduct performance analysis and risk-based design assessments to ensure all product requirements are met.
  • Apply Design for Functionality, Manufacturability, Sustainability, and Cost principles to optimize device solutions.
  • Document and communicate design results through technical memos, reports, and presentations.
  • Evaluate market and stakeholder feedback to identify and mitigate risks related to functionality, reliability, safety, cost, and manufacturing scalability.
  • Support device technology and patent landscaping evaluations by providing design recommendations and revision plans.
  • Manage platform updates through rigorous change control processes, including risk assessments and necessary verifications and validations.
  • Assist with Non-Conformance Material Reports (NCMRs) from production and conduct root cause analysis beyond the immediate design scope.
  • Collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts in Human Factors, Regulatory, Engineering, Manufacturing, Testing, and Quality Engineering.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience with injection molding-based products in the medical or a similar regulated industry, or 2–3 years in a related role in a less regulated industry.
  • Excellent proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks or equivalent), simulation tools, and statistical analysis.
  • A structured, requirements-driven approach to design implementation with strong creative problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to learn and apply modern design excellence tools and methods, such as Six Sigma and Systems Engineering concepts.
  • Ability to collaborate with designers and cross-functional teams to realize complex design solutions.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Nice to have

  • Strong communication skills, including open-mindedness, initiative, constructive thinking, and the ability to work under pressure in changing environments.
  • Experience in a regulated environment.
  • Experience in designing and developing medical devices from early concept to launch, preferably in the drug delivery space.
  • Proven track record of applying platform design and systems engineering concepts to medical device mechanical design.
  • A keen eye for identifying design risks and proactively developing mitigation plans.
  • DFx experience (Design for Testing, Manufacturing, Assembly, Quality, Cost, Sustainability) and a willingness to drive design for optimum solutions considering all stakeholder needs.
