CERN seeks an Electrical Design Engineer for its Geneva site to design low-voltage power distribution networks and support major accelerator infrastructure projects. This permanent, entry-level role is onsite and offers a tax-free monthly stipend.
The Electrical Engineering Group manages the power-distribution networks, fibre-optic infrastructure, and signal cabling for the accelerator complex. This position supports strategic initiatives such as electrical consolidation, low-voltage substation upgrades, and protection relay renovations. The successful candidate will design low-voltage distribution systems, progressively taking on projects of greater complexity.
Responsibilities
- Execute short-circuit calculations.
- Carry out protection coordination and selectivity studies.
- Design electrical power distribution systems and associated circuits.
- Generate reports for calculations, lighting assessments, and earthing evaluations.
- Create electrical design drawings, including single-line diagrams.
- Compile bills of materials for electrical equipment and installations.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience designing low-voltage distribution networks.
- Proven track record in performing short-circuit calculations.
- Experience conducting selectivity studies.
- Knowledge of LV standards, LV protection, indirect contact protection, earthing systems, and safety networks.
- Strong understanding of power systems, voltage drop calculations, short circuit calculations, and dimensioning of cables and equipment.
- Experience with low voltage design calculation tools.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar software.
- Professional background in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Must not have had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
- Spoken and written English proficiency.
Nice to have
- Experience in the design of lighting systems for buildings and external areas using DIALux.
- Experience in secondary design with E-PLAN or similar software.
- Experience in the design of medium voltage distribution networks.
What the company offers
- Monthly tax-free stipend between 6372-7004 Swiss Francs depending on degree.
- 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
- Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health insurance scheme for self, spouse and children.
- Membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
- Family, child and infant monthly allowances.
- Relocation package including installation grant and travel expenses.
- On-the-job and formal training including language classes.
