Proton seeks an Engineering Director in Geneva to lead technical strategy and team growth for its privacy-focused products. This hybrid role requires strong leadership in software engineering and DevSecOps.

The company is looking for a senior leader to steer the engineering efforts for one of its current or future products, aiming to accelerate growth and uphold its mission of building a privacy-centric internet. This position sits within the engineering leadership team, where the incumbent will define technical strategy, manage teams, and partner with product leaders to ensure rapid, high-quality delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Define the technical vision and direction for a specific product line.
  • Guide technical design decisions and lead platform-level discussions.
  • Enhance DevSecOps practices to reduce lead times and time-to-market without compromising quality.
  • Ensure the team delivers scalable, high-quality user experiences on schedule.
  • Create efficient workflows that foster ownership, accountability, and high velocity.
  • Mentor and develop future engineering leaders within the organization.
  • Coach teams to perform at their best and maintain high standards.
  • Refine organizational structures and elevate hiring standards continuously.
  • Build strong partnerships with senior leadership to advance long-term engineering goals.
  • Participate in Proton’s technology and open-source communities.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment where team members feel supported and motivated.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in software engineering, advancing through increasingly complex roles.
  • Direct experience managing engineers and leading teams.
  • Demonstrated history as a manager of managers.
  • Track record of collaborating with senior engineering and product leaders on strategy.
  • Strong empathy, collaboration skills, and resilience.
  • A curious, passionate, and growth-oriented mindset.
  • Deep hands-on background in building maintainable, well-crafted software systems.
  • Mobile-first experience, preferably with a background as a mobile developer.
  • Practical leadership in DevOps and SRE initiatives, driving best practices.
  • Experience scaling customer-facing applications for millions of users across multiple platforms in B2C or B2B contexts.

  • Experience with cryptography.
