HPC Platform Manager and Software Developer (m/f)

MeteoSwiss seeks a Senior HPC Platform Manager and Software Developer in Zürich to manage the CSCS platform, develop weather prediction systems, and support scientific operations.

This position sits within MeteoSwiss, the Swiss National Weather Service. The primary objective is to manage the High-Performance Computing (HPC) platform provided by CSCS for national weather applications, while simultaneously leading its technical evolution and integration with internal and external partners.

Responsibilities

• Manage the utilization of the CSCS HPC infrastructure for MeteoSwiss applications and lead its ongoing technical development in partnership with internal teams and external providers.
• Collect, prioritize, and communicate operational, research, and development needs to CSCS, coordinating efforts to enhance system performance, stability, and scalability.
• Build and maintain components of numerical weather prediction systems, including the underlying workflow and data infrastructure, adapting them to emerging technological standards.
• Provide expert guidance and support to scientists regarding software engineering practices, HPC usage, and operational procedures.
• Guarantee the stable operation of critical production systems, including providing third-level support and performing best-effort interventions to resolve issues.

Requirements

• A Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Computational Science, or a closely related discipline.
• Several years of hands-on experience in software engineering, ideally with Python, modern development methodologies, and cloud-native architectures.
• Proven track record in operating and advancing high-performance computing environments, along with managing complex data and software workflows.
• Strong capability to gather technical requirements from diverse stakeholders and implement solutions through collaboration with internal and external partners.
• Proficiency in at least two of Switzerland’s official languages (German, French, Italian) and good command of English.
