ABB Power Grids seeks an intern in Baden, CH, to apply machine learning and optimization techniques to power grid monitoring algorithms for a six-month onsite role.
This six-month internship, situated within the System and Automation team at the Swiss research center, aims to enhance real-time power system monitoring. The position focuses on leveraging machine learning to accelerate and refine numerical algorithms used for grid stability and analysis.
Responsibilities
- Participate in research initiatives centered on machine learning approaches for monitoring power systems.
- Explore, implement, and improve foundation models designed to capture grid topology, operational states, and measurement data.
- Integrate machine learning strategies with numerical optimization techniques and physical power system principles.
- Assess the effectiveness of new methods using simulation studies and benchmarking processes.
- Share findings with the team, produce technical documentation, and propose innovative ideas for industrial application.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in a Master’s program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
- Solid understanding of numerical optimization methods.
- Competent knowledge of machine learning and deep learning concepts.
- Proficiency in programming with Python, C++, or MATLAB.
- Hands-on experience using PyTorch or comparable deep learning frameworks.
- Fluent command of English, both written and spoken.
Nice to have
- Prior knowledge of power system operations and theory.
- Familiarity with graph neural networks, foundation models, or strategies for adapting machine learning models.
