ABB Power Grids seeks an intern for its Swiss Power Grids Research Center in Baden to support semiconductor packaging research and module development for e-mobility and grid applications.
This six-month internship places you within the Research Team Semiconductor Packaging and Reliability Engineering at the Swiss Power Grids Research Center. The position focuses on advancing novel semiconductor power modules designed for electric mobility and grid infrastructure, combining hands-on laboratory work with simulation and design tasks.
Responsibilities
- Assist in technology development and research for semiconductor power modules, including process engineering and prototype fabrication in a cleanroom setting.
- Conduct accelerated lifetime testing, characterize modules prior to and following aging processes, and oversee test configurations.
- Execute initial root cause analysis using techniques such as X-ray, scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM), and cross-sectioning, while documenting findings clearly.
- Perform electromagnetic and thermal infinite element simulations to verify design features.
- Develop CAD designs for power modules in close collaboration with the team.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an M.Sc. program in material science, electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field (advanced B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree); official enrollment is mandatory.
- Experience in laboratory work and know-how in experimental methods using a wide range of advanced materials characterization techniques.
- Solid programming skills (e.g. LabVIEW, Python, Matlab etc.).
- Fluency in written and spoken English and good communication and technical writing skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with finite element modeling (ANSYS Q3D, COMSOL).
- Know-how in data analysis tools and statistics.
