CSEM offers an on-site internship in Neuchâtel for students to apply machine learning to inverse design and physics-based engineering simulations.
This position bridges artificial intelligence and physics-driven engineering. The candidate will join a cross-functional group to apply machine learning techniques to inverse design and simulation challenges, supporting the development and evaluation of models that optimize device geometries or speed up physical simulations.
Responsibilities
- Build and test machine learning optimization workflows that connect with physics simulators.
- Train and assess neural network models using photonic or electromagnetic simulation datasets.
- Review outcomes, contrast AI-created designs with human-made baselines, and record observations.
- Work alongside photonics and electromagnetics specialists to verify that machine learning outputs remain physically consistent.
- Prepare internal technical documentation and potentially contribute to academic publications if findings are significant.
Requirements
- Active enrollment in a Master’s degree program in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated understanding of machine learning and deep learning through academic courses or personal projects.
- Strong coding abilities in Python, along with hands-on experience using PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Comfortable working within Linux environments and utilizing Git for version control.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
Nice to have
- Ability to communicate in French.
- Knowledge of optimization techniques such as Bayesian optimization, genetic algorithms, or gradient-based methods.
- Familiarity with physics-informed or scientific machine learning approaches.
- Academic or professional background in photonics, electromagnetics, or computational physics.
- Previous exposure to simulation software like COMSOL or similar platforms.
