Climeworks seeks a Senior Lead EIC Engineer for a full-time hybrid role in Opfikon, Zurich. The position involves defining technical direction for Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls systems, leading global design standards, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements, including cold-weather conditions in Alberta.

The Lead EIC Engineer defines and maintains the technical direction for the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EIC) Department. This role leads the development of global EIC design standards, ensures alignment with owner requirements and regulatory codes, and acts as the key interface between EIC and process, mechanical, and project teams. The engineer also oversees junior staff, integrates climate-specific design considerations, and drives continuous improvement through lessons-learned sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve contractor submissions for power distribution, control system architecture, and instrumentation design.
  • Set clear standards for execution methods, field quality controls, and turnover documentation to ensure safe operation and maintenance.
  • Lead efforts to enhance EIC system reliability and performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement preventive actions.
  • Assess and integrate emerging technologies such as smart instrumentation, advanced control systems, and energy efficiency solutions.
  • Identify and reduce EIC-related risks during design and operational phases.
  • Support project teams with estimates for scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of technical decisions, design bases, vendor data, and lessons learned for future operations.
  • Ensure designs are constructable and operable in winter conditions, including temporary works, sequencing, and interface constraints with cold-weather activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in process plants, preferably in cold-weather climates, as an Electrical Controls and Instrumentation Engineer.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one full-cycle project in mining, water treatment, oil and gas, or similar industries, covering FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and start-up.
  • Expertise in low and medium voltage electrical systems, industrial instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% of the time, including extended site presence in Alberta, Canada, during key project phases.

  • Experience in cold-weather or remote/seasonally constrained execution environments.
  • Experience leading engineering teams.
