Linux Systems Engineer (100%)

Threema seeks a Senior Linux Systems Engineer to manage secure, scalable infrastructure for its privacy-focused messenger. The role involves maintaining virtualization, Linux systems, and containerized services in a hybrid setup in Freienbach.

This position sits within the operations team, tasked with running and monitoring Threema’s services while constructing the underlying technical foundation. The primary goal is to guarantee that all systems remain secure, reliable, and capable of scaling, thereby safeguarding user privacy. The entire infrastructure relies on open-source technologies to achieve these objectives.

Responsibilities

• Manage the Proxmox virtualization platform and administer virtual servers.
• Handle administration tasks for Linux-based systems, specifically RHEL.
• Operate, maintain, and enhance infrastructure components, including networking, monitoring, and alerting systems.
• Deploy and maintain applications packaged in containers.
• Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to ensure service continuity.

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of professional experience in a comparable position.
• Proven background in server virtualization.
• Strong expertise in IT security practices, including VPNs, firewalls, and system hardening.
• Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Linux environments.
• Familiarity with automation tools and configuration-as-code methodologies.
• Experience working with monitoring solutions.
• Proficiency with OCI containers, such as Docker or Podman.
• Fluency in written and spoken German and English at a B2 level or higher.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of FreeBSD.
• Experience with container orchestration platforms.
• Background in managing databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL.
• Experience setting up and managing CI/CD infrastructure, particularly GitLab CI.
