Member of Technical Staff, Software Engineer

Microsoft seeks a Senior Software Engineer for its Multimodal team in Zürich to design and build high-quality datasets for next-generation AI models.

This position sits within the Multimodal team, which is dedicated to developing advanced foundation models that span vision, language, and audio capabilities. The primary objective is to explore, design, and construct high-quality datasets that serve as the foundation for frontier AI systems. Success in this role requires close collaboration with scientists, engineers, and annotators to curate, analyze, and evaluate diverse multimodal data sources.

Responsibilities

• Generate and maintain high-quality datasets for training and evaluation purposes, while conducting experiments to measure the impact of data on model performance.
• Design and sustain scalable data pipelines responsible for the ingestion, pre-processing, filtering, and annotation of multimodal content.
• Examine real-world multimodal datasets to evaluate their quality, diversity, and relevance, identifying specific areas for enhancement.
• Develop lightweight tools and workflows to support dataset auditing, visualization, and versioning.
• Partner with Safety, Ethics, and Governance teams to ensure all datasets adhere to standards for quality, privacy, and responsible AI practices.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in AI, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, combined with hands-on engineering experience using Python and standard data libraries.
• Proven experience in data analysis or data engineering.
• Strong proficiency in statistics and exploratory data analysis techniques.
• The ability to clearly communicate technical findings to both research and product teams.

Nice to have

• A Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, along with engineering experience in Python and common data libraries.
• Familiarity with data processing frameworks such as Spark, Ray, or Apache Beam.
• Experience handling large-scale, real-world datasets that are unstructured or semi-structured.
