PhD position - Experimental Study on Jet Multiphase Dynamics of Pelton turbines

EPFL offers a fully funded PhD position in Lausanne to study multiphase flow in Pelton turbines, conducted as part of the JUMP project with Andritz Hydro.

The Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines at EPFL is seeking a researcher to investigate complex multiphase flow phenomena within the cutout region of Pelton turbine buckets. This role is part of the collaborative JUMP project with Andritz Hydro and is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, aiming to deepen fundamental knowledge in hydraulic machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research focusing on hydraulic machinery and experimental fluid dynamics.
  • Build, maintain, and operate laboratory test rigs and associated measurement systems.
  • Write and publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Support general laboratory operations, including teaching assistance and co-supervising student projects.

Requirements

  • Hold an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy, or a closely related field with a strong academic record.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in hydraulic turbomachines and experimental fluid mechanics.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Be formally enrolled in one of the EPFL doctoral school programs.
